Spotify cover art · specs

Spotify cover art size.

Almost every guide says 3000 × 3000. Spotify does not. What Spotify publishes is a range — 640 to 10 000 px — and the famous number comes from distributors. Both are below, quoted from the source, with a checker that reads your artwork in your own browser.

What Spotify actually asks for.

Quoted from the Spotify for Artists support page, checked on 5 September 2026. Spotify can change these, so treat their page as the final word.

Shape1:1 aspect ratio. Square, exactly.
SizeBetween 640 px and 10 000 px wide and tall. Spotify asks for “the highest resolution available” and says plainly: don't upscale images.
FormatTIFF, PNG or JPG using lossless encoding.
ColoursRGB colour space, 24 bits per pixel, with colour profiles applied directly. Embedded colour profiles and orientation metadata are not supported.
Not in the rules3000 × 3000 appears nowhere on Spotify's page. Neither does 300 DPI — resolution in dots per inch is meaningless for a screen, and Spotify never mentions it.
The number everyone repeats

Where 3000 × 3000 comes from.

Your artwork does not go to Spotify directly. It goes to a distributor, and the distributor has its own rules — usually stricter. That is the number that ended up in every guide.

DistroKidAsks for .jpg, a minimum of 1000 × 1000, and says artwork should ideally be 3000 × 3000. If yours is smaller or rectangular they adjust it automatically — “but there's a risk that our fixed version won't look exactly as you intended”. Their page ↗
What this meansExport at 3000 × 3000 and you satisfy Spotify, your distributor and every other store in one go. Not because Spotify demands it — because the chain your file travels through does.
When smaller is fineArtwork you set yourself in Spotify for Artists, or a playlist cover, never passes a distributor. There the only limits are Spotify's own.
Before you upload

What actually gets artwork rejected.

Rarely the size. This list is quoted from DistroKid, who reject on behalf of the stores — the same rules apply whichever distributor you use.

Anything written on itA website address, a QR code, a social media handle, or a price. Your artist name and the release title are fine; everything else reads as advertising.
LogosStreaming service logos such as Spotify or iTunes, and social media logos such as Instagram or TikTok.
QualityBlurry, pixelated, rotated or upscaled images. This is where an undersized file actually costs you — not because 900 px breaks a rule, but because the upscale is visible.
RightsUnlicensed or stock photography you do not have the right to use.
Physical mediaReferences to CDs, vinyl or “compact disc” on a digital release.
RepeatsThe same artwork on more than one release. Duplicate covers get rejected.
How this page works

Your artwork never leaves the browser.

The checker reads width, height and format the same way an image viewer does, on your own machine. Open DevTools, Network tab: your file is never uploaded, and none of its numbers are either — the only request is the anonymous page counter. The privacy page has the detail.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask.

What size should Spotify cover art be?

Spotify publishes one range: square 1:1, between 640 px and 10 000 px on each side, sRGB with 24 bits per pixel, as lossless TIFF, PNG or JPG. Anything inside that range is accepted. The 3000 × 3000 repeated everywhere is a distributor habit, not a Spotify rule.

Why does everyone say 3000 × 3000 then?

Because distributors ask for it. DistroKid, for example, states a minimum of 1000 × 1000 and says artwork should ideally be 3000 × 3000. Since almost every independent release reaches Spotify through a distributor, their number is the one that ends up quoted as Spotify's.

Is 1000 × 1000 enough?

For Spotify itself, yes — it is inside the published 640–10 000 px range. For your distributor it may be the bare minimum, and it will look soft on a large screen. 3000 × 3000 is the safe choice because it satisfies every store at once.

Can I upload a PNG?

Spotify lists TIFF, PNG and JPG with lossless encoding. Some distributors accept only JPG — DistroKid asks for .jpg specifically. If you are delivering through one, follow the distributor, because your file never reaches Spotify unchanged otherwise.

What gets cover art rejected?

Not size, usually. Stores reject artwork that contains a website address, a QR code, a social handle, prices, streaming or social media logos, references to physical media such as “CD”, unlicensed stock photography, or anything blurry, pixelated or rotated. Reusing the same artwork across releases is also rejected.

Does this checker upload my artwork?

No. The image is read by your own browser to get its dimensions and format. Nothing about it is sent anywhere, and there is no account or upload step.
