Rules, not suggestions
What Spotify does not allow.
No textSpotify asks for no text on profile images. That includes your artist name, however tempting: it is already printed over the header in the app.
No advertisingNo logos of sponsors, no calls to action, no links.
No busy backgroundsImages compete with the overlaid name and controls. A calm frame reads better and is less likely to be pulled.
No tour or release promoAnnouncing an upcoming tour or album on the header is explicitly not allowed. Images can be removed if they break these rules.
FormatsJPEG, PNG or GIF, under 20 MB. Our export is JPEG at quality 98, which lands well under the limit at these sizes.
Source: Spotify artist image guidelines. One practical note that is our observation rather than a Spotify rule: in the app your name and avatar sit over the lower-left of the header, so leaving that corner calm tends to look better.

What size is a Spotify artist header?
At least 2660 × 1140 pixels. Spotify accepts JPEG, PNG or GIF, and the file has to stay under 20 MB.
What size is a Spotify profile picture?
At least 750 × 750 pixels, square. Spotify displays it as a circle, so keep the subject in the middle and leave room at the corners.
What size are Spotify gallery images?
At least 690 × 500 pixels. Same formats and the same 20 MB limit as the header and the avatar.
Can I put my name or tour dates on the header?
Spotify's image guidelines ask you not to include text, advertising or busy backgrounds, and not to promote an upcoming tour or release. Images that break those rules can be removed.
Where do I upload the header?
In Spotify for Artists, under your artist profile. You need admin or editor access to the profile. Changes usually appear within a few minutes.
