What Spotify actually wants.
The exact technical rules for each Spotify visual surface, mirrored straight from Spotify for Artists guidance.
Canvas9:16 vertical MP4, 3–8 seconds, recommended 1080×1920. H.264 codec, no audio.
Header2660 × 1140 minimum, JPG or PNG, keep lower-left visually calm — that's where artist name overlays.
Avatar750 × 750 minimum, square source with a circle-safe center — Spotify masks it round.
Cover ArtSpotify accepts 640–10 000 px, square 1:1, sRGB JPG/PNG. Distributors usually ask for 3000 × 3000. Clean edges — flagged if pixelated or text-heavy.

How to make a Spotify Canvas.
Four steps, about a minute. Nothing to install, no account, and the file never leaves your browser.
1. Bring a photo or a clip
Drop your cover art, a press photo or a few seconds of video. No footage yet? Open the built-in Pexels library and pick a mood instead.
2. Crop to 9:16
Drag to reposition, scroll to zoom. The frame is locked to 9:16, so the export cannot come out at the wrong ratio.
3. Trim to 3–8 seconds
Set the start and end, or pick one of ten camera moves for a still image and dial in how strong it is. Then choose the loop style — Continuous, Rebound or Hard Cut, the three Spotify itself names.
4. Export and upload
Export a 1080 × 1920 MP4, then open Spotify for Artists, pick the track and choose Add Canvas. Not sure the file is right? Check it first.

The edge phones cutSpotify warns that the edges of a Canvas may get cut off on some phones but does not say where. The crop shows that margin as a dashed line, so nothing important ends up in it.

What changes when I choose another format?
The specs, upload copy, preview frame and export button all change inside the same workspace. That makes it clear what you are preparing.
Can I start from a Pexels video?
Yes. Pick a mood, preview, click "Use this →", and the clip loads straight into the editor. Pexels content is free for commercial use, no attribution required.
Where does Spotify Canvas appear?
Canvas appears in Spotify's mobile Now Playing view on iOS and Android. It does not replace the desktop cover art.
Do I need a distributor to upload Canvas?
No. Canvas is managed in Spotify for Artists. You still need access to the artist profile or team for the track.
Will my video have a watermark?
No. The encoded MP4 carries nothing extra — no overlay, no logo, no signature.
Which browsers can export MP4?
Chrome 94+, Edge 94+, Brave, Opera, Firefox 130+ and Safari 16.4+ export MP4 through WebCodecs (checked here in Chrome and Firefox 153). JPEG export works everywhere.
